.SG Domain Name Lifecycle

SGNIC (the .SG Domain Registry) has migrated to the new platform and along with this are the changes to the domain lifecycle policy.
See: [IMPORTANT NOTICE]: Revamp of SGNIC's Registry Platform

OLD

NEW

Active

- up to 36 months

Active

- 1 to 3 years

Expired

- Name goes into a 30-day Post-Expiry Grace Period. If renewed, the new expiry date will be 1 or 2 years from the old expiry date. The name is unresolvable, with the status showing “Expired”.

Expiry date

- The Domain Name is auto-renewed by the SGNIC's (or the Registry's) system. The new expiry date is 1 year from the old expiry date. The name goes into a 15-day Auto-Renew Grace Period allowing more time for the Registrant to renew the domain. The Name will still be resolvable or active within this period.
- However, if the Registrant does not take action to renew the domain and/or settle the invoice within the Auto-Renew Grace Period, the domain gets deleted and it goes into the 25-day Redemption Grace Period.

Deleted

- Name goes into a second 30-day Deletion Escrow Period. The name must be reinstated for a fee, and it comes with a 1-year renewal. The new expiry date will be 1 year from the date the reinstatement/renewal is done. The name is unresolvable, with the status showing “Deleted”.

Redemption Grace Period

- in 25 days, the Domain Name is unresolvable or deactivated. The name must be restored for a fee on top of the Renewal Fee.
- if restored, the domain will be immediately reactivated with the expiry date reflecting the autorenewal done.
- If the domain was deleted from any other state and restored, the domain will be transitioned back to a Registered state.
- If not restored, the name will be purged from the system at the end of the 25-day Redemption Grace period.

Renewal

- is done explicitly and can be done at (1) the point of registration, (2) when the name is in Ok status, or (3) during Post Expiry Grace Period.

Renewal

- can also be done explicitly before the expiry date, for 1 or 2 years.

Basically, the key change is the auto-renewal of names; .SG has transitioned to an approach where names are auto-renewed by the system upon expiry.

[Important] What happened during SGNIC's migration

  1. To implement the auto-renewal behaviour in the system, the Active and the Deleted domain names were migrated as they are; while for customers who did not renew on time, their expired domain names were immediately placed into RedemptionPeriod. Please refer to the NEW Lifecycle above specifically the Redemption Grace Period.
  2. During the migration (23 March 2024), SGNIC forced approved all names in pending transfer status (regardless of whether the transfer request has been for 1 day or 7 days already). I.e. all these names are in the winning registrar's account already.
